In the mid-16th century, Japan was experiencing a period of deep political fragmentation, known as the Sengoku era (the Warring Provinces). The central authority of the shogunate had effectively collapsed, and the country was divided into dozens of competing domains ruled by various daimyo. Against this backdrop emerged a figure whose ambitions went far beyond expanding his own lands — Oda Nobunaga, the ruler of Owari Province, who sought to unite the entire country.
His military campaigns were accompanied by radical reforms: he introduced the mass use of arquebuses, built new types of fortifications, promoted free trade, and dismantled medieval barriers between regions. Yet these actions earned him many enemies. An anti-Nobunaga coalition formed against him — an unstable but dangerous alliance that included powerful daimyo (Takeda Shingen, Uesugi Kenshin, Azai Nagamasa, Asakura Yoshikage), militant Buddhist organizations and their temples, as well as the Ikko-ikki religious movement.
However, when Nobunaga’s power was at its peak, an unexpected betrayal took place. In June 1582, his long-time vassal Akechi Mitsuhide, having been ordered to march west against the Mori clan, suddenly turned his army toward Kyoto and surrounded Nobunaga at the Honno-ji temple. Caught with only a small retinue, Nobunaga chose to avoid capture and disgrace by committing seppuku. Although Oda Nobunaga’s life ended abruptly, he profoundly reshaped Japanese history: he destroyed the most powerful feudal and religious forces, opened the country to new military technologies and trade, and laid the foundations for the eventual unification of Japan, accomplished by his successors Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu.
1570: Самотній Нобунаґа is a solo board game depicting the struggle between Oda Nobunaga and the Anti-Nobunaga Coalition that began in 1570. The player takes the side of Nobunaga, striving to achieve the victory conditions while avoiding the defeat conditions.
